Optimizing VLC Media Player for h264 Playback

Tech Blog - Here is a simple howto on configuring your VLC player to play h264 or MKV files(720p and up) without lagging or with minimal lagging, for this howto I'm using VLC Media PLayer 1.1.4 running on Windows Vista.

Below is are thing need to be selected on your VLC media player, this configuration are base on my experience I dont guarantee it will work for you, however if your experiencing lagging issue with video files encoded in h264 give this howto a try.

Now to the howto - open your VLC Media Player


Go to Tools > Preferences > Input & Codecs Settings > then Make sure

"Skip H.264 in-loop deblocking filter" is set to All

Then select "Show setting" at the bottom right corner of the Window click on All it should show "Advance settings" now

Click on Advanced make sure on the "Performance options" the following are selected
  • "Allow only one running instance"
  • "One instance when started from file"
  • "Increase the priority of the process"
Now click on "Input / Codecs" -> "Video codecs"

Click on FFmpeg make sure the following is selected
  • "Hurry up"
  • "Allow speed tricks"
  • "Quality level" is rd

Then click on x264 on "H.264 profile" select "main"

Nokia 5230 | Phone Review

Tech Blog - The Nokia 5230 is good looking and easy to navigate. It has a large 3.2 inch screen, which although slightly smaller than the iPhone comes with a higher resolution of 640 by 360 pixels. The touch screen is resistive and therefore not oversensitive, and also comes with a useful stylus. You can take photos on the 5230, but as the camera is only 2 megapixels it is best suited for quick snaps.

In terms of internet and connectivity features, this Symbian S6O smart phone comes with 3G but no Wi Fi, although it also has Bluetooth and USB connectivity. It’s high speed HSDPA means that the 5230 boasts download speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps. One interesting feature is the built in A-GPS receiver, which also comes with Ovi Maps supplied. The phone has built in access to the Ovi Store for downloading any other apps you may want.

This phone has a substantial amount of storage, with 70MB of memory initially that can be expanded to anything up to 16GB with the addition of a microSD card, although this will have to be bought separately. Although it is quite a chunky, heavy model compared to some of the lighter models on the market, the extra weight can be attributed to the bigger battery, meaning the 5230 comes with excellent battery life.

As expected, the manufacturer has, this time, placed much emphasis on multimedia playback (as many smartphone manufacturers are beginning to do), and there’s evidence of this in the video player and video camera in the POP.
