Reboot and Shutdown Linux | Ubuntu Howto

Tech Blog - Here is a quick howto on rebooting and shutting down Linux systems using the command line.

To properly reboot system immediately, to add a grace period replace "now" with +(number of minutes)
$ shutdown -r now

To reboot a system immediately and do filesystem (fsck) check during bootup
$ shutdown -rF now

To shutdown and halt the system immediately
$ shutdown -h now

To shutdown and halt the system immediately answer yes to all the prompts
$ shutdown -y -h now

Of course if all else fail you can try the following
$ init 6
$ reboot
$ halt

Diagnose Driver Problem on Windows Vista Howto

Tech Blog - If you encountering blue screen of death(BSOD) after installation of new hardware, have been experiensing BSOD, and you suspect that it is a driver problem you probably know how time consumming it is to determine which driver is causing the problem and what is the issue and the solution for it, good thing with Windows Vista Microfot has included a tool for verifying and diagnosing drivers installed on your computers, now let got to the howto.

To get to the Verifier screen, click start > run > type verifier.exe a window like the one below should come up

Select Create Standard Settings then click next

Then Automatically select unsigned drivers as most driver problem are caused by unsigned drivers.

Verifier should give you a list and you can try uninstalling it and see if the problems goes away if not, you could try going to the verifier again then select Automatically Select Drivers Built for Older Versions of Windows as you might have installed an incompatible driver.

XSCF Command - Console Howto

Tech Blog - Here is my simple quick and dirty guide on navigating through XSCF shell on your console, we don't often navigate through the console so it thought its a good idea to keep notes about it :) this is quick guide on some basic stuff like check hardware compnent, check domain status, power up and down as well as reset of the domain.

To Connect to a domain
XSCF> console -d domainhere

To Show status of a domain
XSCF> showdomainstatus -d domainhere

To displays the domain information specified for a system board.
XSCF> showdevices

To displays the temperature, humidity, voltage, and fan rotation speed.
XSCF> showenvironment

To lists degraded components.
XSCF> showstatus

To displays users who login to the XSCF.
XSCF> who

To reset domain there are 3 modes for reset command
  • por: Domain system reset
  • request: Domain panic instruction
  • xir: Domain CPU reset
XSCF> reset -d domainhere por

To power on/off all domain or sepcified domain
XSCF> poweron
XSCF> poweroff

Remember you can always use --help on every command to see what are teh available switched and options for it.

To logout of XSCF> type exit
To return to XSCF from a domain terminal type #.
