Media Center | Open Source | Freevo

Recently have been thinking of building my own Media Center, so I have been looking at an Open Source version of Microsoft Media Portal that can almost do anything that Media Portal can do, In my opinion every media center has to be allow you towatch TV. It should be able to receive TV signals form cable, satellite dish or a standard TV aerial and it shouldn't matter whether the signal is a digital video broadcast (DVB) or analogue. Secondly, it has to be able to play DVDs/Blu-ray. it should also be able to play downloaded content movie and music, it should be able to get information about a movie/ music and also allow you to subrscribe to rss feed and surf the net, a great Media Center will also allow you to ripped and record movies and tv shows, basically what I want is a PC that act like a Media Center :)

So far the only one that came close and I think what I will be using is Freevo, Freevo allows you to manage your entire digital media collection - music, videos, photos etc. via a remote controlled TV interface and through the built in web interface you can also access your media, view your TV guide and schedule recordings from anywhere in the world. The benefit of freevo above other HTPC solutions is that freevo is 100% DRM free, plays video in 99.99% of formats, and most of all puts you in control of the television.

As an open-source home theatre PC platform, Freevo employs a number of open-source audio/video tools, MPlayer and/or Xine are used to play audio and video files in most popular formats. Freevo can be used both for a standalone HTPC computer with a TV+remote, as well as on a regular desktop computer or laptop using the monitor and keyboard.

Check out a list of Freevo features here

Identifying Global and Non Global Zones

Here is a quick howto on identifying global and non global zones on Solaris 10.

If you login to a host and need to identify if the host your on is a global zone or a non global zone, the easiest way to do this is to do cat on /etc/host would usually refer to the global host if your in a non global zone ( Correct me if Im wrong here, this is just based on my experience)

Now to identify if your Non global zones are sparse or full zones, you will need to login to the global zones and to zonecfg -z info to get the zonename you can do zoneadm list, the ones with a lot of inherited filesystem are sparse zones and the one with a few inherited filesystem are full zones.

Thats it for today.

Get rid of Passphrase | Apache Server Startup

If you have enable SSL on your Apache Server, you will notice that whenever your start Apache Server with "apachectl startssl" or "httpd startssl" it will ask you for your passphrase, the reason for this is that the RSA private key inside your server.key file is stored in encrypted format, the passphrase is needed to decrypt this file, so it can be read, however this is a pain specially when the server rebooted by itself and Apache didn't start on its own because you are required to enter a passphrase for it to start, this howto will show you how to remove the passphrase dialog, however to take note that removing the passphrase removes a layer of security from you server, now lets go and remove it :)
Step 1 - Remove the encryption from the RSA private key

$ cp server.key server.key.org
$ openssl rsa -in server.key.org -out server.key

Step 2 - Make sure the server.key file is only readable by root:

$ chmod 400 server.key

Now server.key contains an unencrypted copy of the key. If you point your server at this file, it will not prompt you for a passphrase, yay no more waking up in the middle of the night because no one knows the passphrase to teh Apache Server.

Mail server Failover howto

Sometimes we need a mail server failover, because if you don't when your mail server went down you won't be receiving any mail and we all know how important email is this days, one way of doing mail server failover is through Domain Name Server (DNS).

By defining your MX record likeshown below, If the preferred mail server which is mail.review-ninja.com went down, mail will be sent to the secondary server mail.review-ninja.org, it is also advisable to host the secondary mail server in another location you will also need to configure the second mail server as a relay with a long retry time so that it will accept mail and try to relay it to the main mail server depending on how long you set your retry time.

To define MX records with different priorities.

; zone file fragment
IN MX 10 mail.review-ninja.com.
IN MX 20 mail.review-ninja.org.
....
mail IN A 192.168.56.109

Do rememebr to test your Mail Server Failover setup from time to time.

Windows Vista Games | Explorer

Been using Windows Vista for a while now, its not a great operating system as I think XP is is better than Vista, however it works for me most of the time on my laptop, I mainly use it for playing games but I am disappointed from time to time as I can't run some games I use to play on my XP system, anyway while browsing through my Windows Vista I discovered Windows Vista Game Explorer.

The Windows Game Explorer is a new feature on Windows that let you manage your installed games on your computer, it provides the user control panel view of the installed Windows Vista games, Icons view for each game provide easy access to the games and offer detailed information about each, such as a game's publisher and developer, which version of the game you own, when you last played, box cover art, and the release date, genre, and rating for each game. You can use this information to sort and organize your games in meaningful ways, When you first start up Windows Vista only the default games show up with big icons which makes identification easier. if your asking why use the Windows Vista Games Explorer to manage the games installed on your Windows Vista computer, you will want to use to use it because it is easier to manage and keep all those icons on one place, specially if you have lots of games installed, do take not howveer that not all games are suppoprted I would guess its safe to say that unpopular agems are not supported, however you can still add them to Windows Vista Games Explorer by moving the directoy manually to the explorer folder.

Note: You can find Windows Vista Games Explorer listed on the Start menu.

Backup | Linux | Unix | Flar howto

Recently I have been doing some of my backup on home server using the flarcreate commands, their easy to use and they are image copy of the OS, so its easy to recover from it, the only thing that is you can’t do with it is selective restore of files like what you can do with UFSdump, but for me this is convenient enough for my home server, which I use it on.

What is Flar ?

The flar command is used to administer flash archives. A flash archive is an easily transportable version of a refer-ence configuration of the Solaris operating environment, plus optional other software. Such an archive is used for the rapid installation of Solaris on large numbers of machines. You can create a flash archive using the command "flarcreate"

Example of flar command on creating a Flash Archive
